we're here to answer all of your questions!
Welcome!
For many homeowners and business owners who are looking at fire protection for the first time, there can be many questions. DAT Fire currently specializes in portable fire extinguishers, but we will be more than happy to find the answer to any question you may have!
As a business, what is legally required for me to be compliant regarding extinguishers?
The number, size, and type of extinguishers must be suitable to the location or building as well as particular fire hazards according to the NFPA10 guidelines. DAT Fire's licensed technicians can help you determine what is needed for you to be safe and in compliance. We will also ensure that all other requirements in regard to access and placement are met accordingly. In general, you want to be sure that extinguishers are visible and unobstructed, up to code, and that there is no more than 75 feet between extinguishers. However, variables apply, which is why a licensed technician should be involved.
How often do I need fire extinguisher inspections?
Professional fire extinguisher inspections are required by law to be held annually and performed by a licensed technician. Your extinguishers should also be checked monthly. This can be performed by trained employees, but can also be contracted out to DAT Fire.
What service/maintenance is required on my extinguisher(s)?
Maintenance varies from one type of extinguisher to another, but the NFPA10 requires that internal maintenance be performed at certain intervals to ensure the integrity of the extinguisher. Wet chemical and CO2 fire extinguishers should be hydrostatically tested every 5 years. Dry chemical extinguishers require internal maintenance every 6 years, and hydrostatic tests every 12 years.
What is the difference between purchasing new extinguishers from a big-box store versus an extinguisher service provider?
The main reason for going through a professional is that it actually becomes more practical and cost-efficient to purchase through a service-provider, when all considerations needed for compliance and adequate protection are considered. A professional will ensure extinguishers are installed properly throughout your building and that someone is on hand to call when you need inspection or emergency repair/replacement. In addition, a service provider can ensure you have the proper type of extinguisher on hand; and at DAT Fire, we are proud to provide quality, durable, rechargeable extinguishers that can last decades when properly maintained. Extinguishers sold in big-box stores may save minimal upfront cost, but they are usually lower-quality and residential grade. Even new extinguishers require certification (inspection tags), which will add the additional cost of a service call.
